High-resolution weather radar
data for agricultural applications

Real-time information of local rainfall events can support farmers in the planning of irrigation measures. Ground-based weather radar devices deliver high-resolution information about rainfall events. Together with FURUNO, FERN.Lab is exploring the potential of these data for agricultural applications.

In a joint feasibility study, FURUNO installed a dual-polarized X-band ground-based weather radar device on the roof of Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences. Since October 2021, rainfall information within a 70 km radius are continuously be recorded. Within the experiment and the project AgriSens DEMMIN 4.0, data from specific agricultural areas (Demmin, MV) are validated with in situ data with data from the GFZ and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The greatest challenge of this project is to process Analysis Ready Data from the raw radar data. To address this, a scientific software package was developed and is available open-source.
