heathland management.

Former military training areas, often heathlands, are critical to maintaining and achieving ecosystem biodiversity in Germany. Invasive shrub species can greatly affect biodiveristy, therefore proper monitoring and management of the long-term condition is key to maintaining these important cultural areas.

In collaboration with the environmental foundation Heinz Sielmann Stiftung, FERN.Lab is developing a robust model for biomass volume assessment of invasive shrubs and herbs.
For this application, a user-friendly, automated classification tool will provide users with a transparent overview of results and uncertainties. Customized high-resolution UAV-based RBG images are used to develop targeted management strategies.
