Based on the open-source scientific software package
WRaINfo co-developed by GFZ researcher Alice Künzel, the FERN.Lab developed the webservice Xregnet to process and visualize precipitation data provided by FURUNO dual-polarized x-band ground-based weather radar devices.
Xregnet is an easy-to-use service that runs on any device with internet access and a standard browser, requires no programming skills or advanced understanding of mapping services.
While the primary aim of the project is to explore the potential of the service for agriculture, other possible use cases are currently being explored as well.
Since October 2021, rainfall information within a 70 km radius of the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences (HSNB) is continuously being recorded by one of FURUNO’s x-band radars. Data from specific agricultural areas (Demmin, MV) are validated using in situ data with data from the GFZ and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Since summer 2024, an additional validation campaign, funded by the GFZ Innovation Fund, is underway within the same area.
